Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO)
Shunsuke Kondo, President

We would like to express our deepest respect and sincere appreciation for Suttu town’s application for Literature Survey and for Kamoenai village’s acceptance of the proposal by the Japanese government.

Having received approval today for a change in our FY2020 business plan from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), NUMO initiates implementation of Literature Survey in Suttu town and Kamoenai village, both in Hokkaido. For the time being, we will start with collecting and organizing necessary literature and data such as geological maps and academic papers and explaining the process of Literature Survey to the local residents.

The purpose of Literature Survey is to have the interested municipalities understand more about the geological disposal project by providing information about our survey and analysis using literature and data concerning the local geological environment. We consider Literature Survey a part of our communication activities. we will never bring any radioactive waste during the investigation period.

In implementing Literature Survey in Suttu town and Kamoenai village, we are going to explain about the project from technical and safety perspectives as well as the progress and results of the Literature Survey in “the Place for Dialogue”, etc. Besides, we will widely lay out effects and risks that the project may bring about to the local industries. We will also foster continuing dialogues so the vision for the local economic development can be discussed.

We will keep promoting communication activities nationwide to have people not only in Suttu town and Kamoenai village but also across the country know more about geological disposal and Japanese geological environment so that we can think about how to realize geological disposal together as the entire society.
