Dr. Hiroyuki Umeki, a board member of NUMO, was honored with the Wendell D. Weart Lifetime Achievement Award at the Waste Management 2024 conference held in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, from March 10th to 14th.

This recognition acknowledges his long-term contributions to research, development, and promotion of the final disposal of high-level radioactive waste, making significant international contributions.

The award was established by the Waste Management (WM)Symposia and its supporting organizations in 2001. Since then, 23 individuals won the award and Dr. Umeki is the first Japanese recipient to ever receive the award.

We will continue to collaborate and cooperate with the international community towards achieving safe geological disposal.
